Why did Jesus come?

1Jn 3:5 But you know that He appeared so that He might take away our sins. And in him is no sin.

1Jn 3:8(b)…the reason the Son of God appeared was to destroy the devil’s work.

“freed from the ravages of sin”…eternal death, sickness and oppression…make them whole

 

What did Jesus do?

Ac 10:38 how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and power, and how he went around doing good and healing all who were under the power of the devil, because God was with him.

 

 What did Jesus tell his disciples to do?

Mt 10:7 As you go, preach this message: ‘The kingdom of heaven is near.’

Mt 10:8 Heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse those who have leprosy, drive out demons. Freely you have received, freely give.

 

Jesus gave them power and authority to accomplish the task.

Lk 9:1 When Jesus had called the Twelve together, He gave them power and authority to drive out all demons and to cure diseases,

Lk 9:2 and he sent them out to preach the kingdom of God and to heal the sick

The King’s Dominion has come(ing) to earth and you can(will) see His will has being done.

His world invading ours.

 

Matthew puts is slightly differently..Jesus gave authority given to His disciples

Mt 10:1 He called his twelve disciples to him and gave them authority to drive out evil spirits and to heal every disease and sickness.

 

Just to be sure that we don’t think we have a different commission or equipping

Jn 20:21 Again Jesus said, “Peace be with you! As the Father has sent me, I am sending you.”….

Sent in the same way and with the same commission, authority and power

 

The disciples were told to….

Mt 28:19 …..go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,

Mt 28:20 and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”

 

What happened when they obeyed?

Mk 16:20 Then the disciples went out and preached everywhere, and the Lord worked with them and confirmed his word by the signs that accompanied it.

 

We have all been given the opportunity to do what Jesus did?….”anyone” can participate

Jn 14:12 I tell you the truth, anyone who has faith in me will do what I have been doing. He will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the Father.

 

When we pray who do we ask?…ask The Father!

JN 16:23 “ In that day you will not question Me about anything. Truly, truly, I say to you, if you ask the Father for anything in My name, He will give it to you.

JN 16:24 “ Until now you have asked for nothing in My name; ask and you will receive, so that your joy may be made full.

 

What gives us access to ask the Father?

Jn 16:26 In that day you will ask in my name. I am not saying that I will ask the Father on your behalf.

Jn 16:27 No, the Father himself loves you because you have loved me and have believed that I came from God.

 

 

Healings (signs and wonders) were confirmation of Jesus’ authority and His words

 Lk 5:17 One day as he was teaching, Pharisees and teachers of the law, who had come from every village of Galilee and from Judea and Jerusalem, were sitting there. And the power of the Lord was present for him to heal the sick.

 

Authority :When he was returning to His Father He said, I have all authority….go…I have sent you

Mt 28:18 Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.

Mt 28:19 Therefore (I tell you to) go…

 

Power : Jesus knew that all things were under His power.

Jn 13:3 Jesus knew that the Father had put all things under his power, and that he had come from God and was returning to God;

 

Jesus’ teaching was authenticated by the authority and power he was seen to exercise

Lk 4:36 All the people were amazed and said to each other, “What is this teaching? With authority and power he gives orders to evil spirits and they come out!”

 

Promise that the authority He had already given would be permanently backed with God’s constant and present power

Lk 24:49 I am going to send you what my Father has promised; but stay in the city until you have been clothed with power from on high.”

 

The promise repeated….the disciples had already received the authority & power

Ac 1:8 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”

 

We have all been given the opportunity to do what Jesus did….”anyone” can participate

Jn 14:12 I tell you the truth, anyone who has faith in me will do what I have been doing. He will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the Father.

 

Peter & John did what Jesus did – miracles – and had the opportunity to tell about Jesus

Ac 4:7 They had Peter and John brought before them and began to question them: “By what power or what name did you do this?”

 

Signs confirm the truth and all Lydda turned to God.

Ac 9:33 There he found a man named Aeneas, a paralytic who had been bedridden for eight years.

Ac 9:34 “Aeneas,” Peter said to him, “Jesus Christ heals you. Get up and take care of your mat.” Immediately Aeneas got up.

Ac 9:35 All those who lived in Lydda and Sharon saw him and turned to the Lord

 

Paul :  “lead the gentiles to obey”…through the power of signs and wonders.

Ro 15:18 I will not venture to speak of anything except what Christ has accomplished through me in leading the Gentiles to obey God by what I have said and done

Ro 15:19 by the power of signs and miracles, through the power of the Spirit. So from Jerusalem all the way around to Illyricum, I have fully proclaimed the gospel of Christ.

 

The message needs to be with demonstration and not just with persuasive words

1Co 2:4 My message and my preaching were not with wise and persuasive words, but with a demonstration of the Spirit’s power,

1Co 2:5 so that your faith might not rest on men’s wisdom, but on God’s power.

 

The gospel given not just with words but it was with

  1. Not only words but
  2. Power
  3. The Holy Spirit
  4. Deep conviction

1Th 1:5 because our gospel came to you not simply with words, but also with power, with the Holy Spirit and with deep conviction. You know how we lived among you for your sake.

 

Paul prayed…renew our minds regarding God’s will and purpose and expectation of us

Eph 1:18 I pray also that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in the saints,

Eph 1:19 and his incomparably great power for us who believe. That power is like the working of his mighty strength,

Eph 1:20 which he exerted in Christ when he raised him from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly realms,

 

Paul prayed that we would be strengthened with power through His Spirit

Eph 3:16 I pray that out of his glorious riches he may strengthen you with power through his Spirit in your inner being, ….

 

Eph 3:20 Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us,

 

Steven – a man of grace did “the stuff”

Ac 6:8 Now Stephen, a man full of God’s grace and power, did great wonders and miraculous signs among the people.

 

The early disciples needed signs and wonders to attract attention to the message..so do we.

Ac 8:5 Philip went down to a city in Samaria and proclaimed the Christ there.

Ac 8:6 When the crowds heard Philip and saw the miraculous signs he did, they all paid close attention to what he said.

Ac 8:7 With shrieks, evil spirits came out of many, and many paralytics and cripples were healed.

 

Jesus drove out the demons by the power of God and this was a sign that the Kingdom has come.

Mt 12:28 But if I drive out demons by the Spirit of God, then the kingdom of God (The King’s Dominion) has come upon you.

It is a sign that His Kingdom has come….to earth…and His will has been done.

His world invaded ours.

 

Why is the Spirit of The Lord on us?

Lk 4:17 The scroll of the prophet Isaiah was handed to him. Unrolling it, he found the place where it is written:

Lk 4:18 “The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to release the oppressed,

 

The power of the Lord… we have been given the same power..While teaching others

Lk 5:17 One day as he was teaching, Pharisees and teachers of the law, who had come from every village of Galilee and from Judea and Jerusalem, were sitting there. And the power of the Lord was present for him to heal the sick.

 

If we remain in Him He will do whatever we wish

Jn 15:7 If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be given you.

 

We have been give authority and power so we expected to “do the stuff” ..to be fruitful

Jn 15:2 He cuts off every branch in me that bears no fruit, while every branch that does bear fruit he prunes so that it will be even more fruitful.

 

We are His friends who know everything Jesus learned from His father.

Jn 15:15 I no longer call you servants, because a servant does not know his master’s business. Instead, I have called you friends, for everything that I learned from my Father I have made known to you.

Jn 15:16 You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you to go and bear fruit—fruit that will last. Then the Father will give you whatever you ask in my name.

 

My Father will give you what you ask….you can ask Him yourself.

Jn 16:23 In that day you will no longer ask me anything. I tell you the truth, my Father will give you whatever you ask in my name.

Jn 16:24 Until now you have not asked for anything in my name. Ask and you will receive, and your joy will be complete.

Jn 16:26 In that day you will ask in my name. I am not saying that I will ask the Father on your behalf.

 

Authority is transferable ….Jesus gave his authority to the disciples and to us also

Nu 27:18 So the LORD said to Moses, “Take Joshua son of Nun, a man in whom is the spirit, and lay your hand on him.

 

Nu 27:20 Give him some of your authority so the whole Israelite community will obey him.

 

Nu 27:23 Then he laid his hands on him and commissioned him, as the LORD instructed through Moses.

 

Philip in Samaria – When they saw the signs he did.

Ac 8:5 Philip went down to a city in Samaria and proclaimed the Christ there.

Ac 8:6 When the crowds heard Philip and saw the miraculous signs he did, they all paid close attention to what he said.

Ac 8:7 With shrieks, evil spirits came out of many, and many paralytics and cripples were healed.

Ac 8:8 So there was great joy in that city

 

The ex sorcerer saw and believed because of the signs.

Ac 8:13 Simon himself believed and was baptized. And he followed Philip everywhere, astonished by the great signs and miracles he saw.

 

The Church can call on God’s help with signs and wonders…and He answers

Ac 4:29 Now, Lord, consider their threats and enable your servants to speak your word with great boldness.

Ac 4:30 Stretch out your hand to heal and perform miraculous signs and wonders through the name of your holy servant Jesus.”

Ac 4:31 After they prayed, the place where they were meeting was shaken. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and spoke the word of God boldly.

 

Impartation

Ac 9:17 Then Ananias went to the house and entered it. Placing his hands on Saul, he said, “Brother Saul, the Lord; Jesus, who appeared to you on the road as you were coming here has sent me so that you may see again and be filled with the Holy Spirit.”

 

God’s heart

More than we ask or imagine

Eph 3:20 Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us,

Eph 3:21 to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, for ever and ever! Amen.

 

Pressed down shaken together : is in the context of judgement and forgiveness

Lk 6:37 “Do not judge, and you will not be judged. Do not condemn, and you will not be condemned. Forgive, and you will be forgiven.

Lk 6:38 Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap. For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.”

 

God will give us more that we give but He will give it with the measure we use.

 

Jesus promised the Holy Spirit and power and that we would do all He did with faith.

Jesus ministered under the authority of God and in His power….so do we..those in whom He is well pleased..

Mt 3:16 As soon as Jesus was baptized, he went up out of the water. At that moment heaven was opened, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and lighting on him.

Mt 3:17 And a voice from heaven said, “This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased.”

 

When we know it is God who does all the work – JOY

Jn 16:24 Until now you have not asked for anything in my name. Ask and you will receive, and your joy will be complete
